Hi Swimmom................ We are about 50 miles apart. I live in a small town between Warren and Youngstown. I took my older son to see a Dr. named Max Wiznitzer up in your area. Did you ever hear of him?

Hi Fay--My son was diagnosed by Dr. Wiznitzer. My pediatrician didn't think there was anything wrong with him, but we knew there was so we went to Dr. Wiznitzer who agreed with us that our son was autistic. He said moderate at that time, he was 4-1/2. Now he is quite high functioning, although we placed him in a multiple handicapped class for jr. high so he'd get the attention he needed and the protection. He had been in an inclusion class from 2nd til 6th grade. My daughter swims on swim team. She swam in Youngstown at Youngstown Univ. (is that what it's called) a few months ago. What city do you live in? Did you say both of your sons are autistic? Teri

Hi Teri........ My youngest son has PDD. He is going into the second grade this year full inclusion with a part time aide. My older son will be in the fourth grade this year full inclusion except for reading with a full time aide.(he has had an aide since first grade). Does your son have an aide in school? How many children have autism in your schol district? Our school district now has six, that includes my boys and a boy with aspergers. They are becoming more open to children with autism now than when my older son started school, we had to fight for an aide for him and the extra help that he needed. Now the school district is sending their teachers to school and having speakers come in to teach the teachers how to teach children with autism. It is very nice to see! Youngstown is only about 30 min. from here. Bye for now...

Hi Fay--My son had an aide and a special ed teacher part time in 2nd and 3rd grade. Then in 4th thru 6th grade he had a special ed teacher part time. It really wasn't enough. I think it would have been much more successful with a full time aide to help him before he got too frustrated. Now he's in a class of 8 kids with a special ed teacher and an aide all day. He goes to a higher functioning math and reading class because the kids in his MH class are lower functioning than Eric. If you want to just email me instead of responding on this site (which I'm not even sure how I found this site) you can at:TMK_01@msn.com I think my son is ready to go back to school and a more structured day. He goes back next week. We live in a big city and there are a lot of autistic kids in different programs throughout the city. When Eric was in inclusion he was the only autistic child in his school, that was hard for him. Write soon, Teri

Hey there,
I too am an Ohio Buckeye......(Maple Hts). My youngest son is 6 diagnosed with PDD/Autism on the high functioning end. He is in kindergarten now (inclusion) and I am going bonkers with anxiety about it. He will ride the school bus with lots of other children and that scares me. aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! :)

Hi Mom2Nate--Hey, we're practically neighbors. I haven't talked to anyone who lives so close on any of the autism sites. Will your son be riding the special ed bus or a regular one. At least the special ed bus doesn't usually have very many kids on it and it usually has an aide on it. At least in Parma. I haven't figured out how to see your message while I'm replying so I can't remember what else you wrote about. Was your son diagnosed by Dr. Max Wiznitzer like every other child who is autistic in this area? My son was.All I can tell you is it does get easier. My son was much more of a handful when he was young. Now at 13-1/2 he's pretty indepedent and can even be left home alone--believe me I never thought we'd be able to do that! How's the school program your son is in? Eric's in a class of only 8, MH, and doing very well there. He had been in inclusion for 5 years, but it really stressed him out the older he got. Glad to hear from you. Teri

Dave--Thanks for the advice. I thought I tried scrolling down when I was replying and didn't find anything--But I guess I did something wrong cause I just tried it again and it worked. Thanks for letting me know. Teri

Hi Teri, I just assumed my son would be on a regular bus. I will definately look into that. Nate was diagnosed by Dr. B.Cohen at the Cleveland Clinic. We've been to University Hospital as well, but did not see Dr. Wiznitzer. Your progress with your son is very encouraging! Our district doesn't have the best reputation
with the professionals anymore, now that one of their key
people has left the district. His K teacher is very good, but I'm not sure about the MH teacher he'll be with the second half of the day, she's new and so is Nate to her room...........(drum roll).

Hi Tess--Usually most special ed kids do ride a special bus. Hope you found out about that, maybe that'll relieve some of your worries. I just called transportation today and talked to Eric's bus driver-she sounds nice. He'll be transported in a station wagon on the way home from school, so he'll be dropped off right in our driveway--which will be nice. So, is Nate in inclusion kindergarten in the morning, then goes to a MH class in the afternoon? Eric only went to kindergarten in the morning in a DH class. His teacher didn't think he was ready for a full day. Even though I thought he was--better than sitting at home doing nothing. The new school year is always so scarry--it doesn't change as they get older. I'm always nervous that he'll have nice teachers and the kids will be nice to him. When he was in inclusion we had a lot of problems with kids teasing him and putting him up to bad things. It really stressed him out. He's much happier being with kids that are similar to him. Talk to you later. If you want, you can email me directly at TMK_01@msn.com Teri

Hi Fay,
I'm from Ohio too (New Philadelphia). welcome to our message board. I have 2 children, Sarah 12yrs old.(typically developing) and a near 11 yrold boy, A.J. with Autism & bipolar disorder.
He is very active, keeps me goin', and very strong...he loves his music and disney movies...verbally he's..echolalic, though he can answer some questions, and he does use manners, he is conversationally non-verball. He's a great kid, and just lucky he's my boy.
