My son is four and recently diagnosed with AS. After he eats he always complains about being cold and insists on being held. He gets goosebumps and actually feels cold (nose, ears, hands). Also, when he has a fever he is completely normal (like other kids his age) no autistic behavior, eye contact, conversational...HAPPY! I had seen someone post a question about a presentation done by a Dr. Zimmerman (?) at a recent Autism conference in Minnesota(?) regarding behavior improvement with fever...there was never a response. Does anyone out there have any knowledge/information regarding these issues? Much thanks!

Getting cold after eating may have to do with the bloodflow going to the stomach to aid digestion. It would, in turn, make the extremeties get colder. I know it happens to me, too.

Hi. I'm new to this board. My son is now 13, and when he was younger I noticed major improvements in his behavior when he had a fever. He would be calm, easy to get along with - the model patient! I never thought about it much. So yes, I've observed this phenomenon.:)

Hi,
I have noticed that my 10yr old son, Liam, has always been so well behaved when he has a fever - how bizzare!!
Cheers

I think anybody is calm when having a fever. Immune system is busy fighting infection, that raises a temperature, blood gets thicker, blood pressure is higher, less oxygen circulates - you feel sleepy.
My son is very quiet and doesn't move much when he's sick. Then again neither do I, I think it's more of a human trait than one of autism. Since my son does not speak, I always watch for these times where he gets like this so we can take him to the doctors. Coughing is a sign, so is temp, but vomitting is not. He likes to make himself vomit from time to time. Anyone else see this? He just gets all happy, almost overstimulated when he does it. I am lost on that one.

Dave, My son Corey vomits when he gets upset too. However fever has never been obvious with him or illness of any kind unless he is vomitting alot. He never tells us of pain even though he is talking now. He had fabrile seizures before we even knew he had a temp.

It's not really a question of him being upset, but it seems to be something he just likes to do. This is why we are investing in a good carpet cleaning machine instead of renting one. Between the fecal smearing and other things I am a cleaning genius.
