hi,
On 7th and 8th october 2005, I attended the 2 day workshop for RDI.
at first I could not even believe they were wanted expected us to STOP ABA.
after reading such great research results on ABA, I thought it was the best thing for my niece.
I had NO idea my whole prespective on autism would change in 2 days.
believe it or not....it has.
simple things I learned from the workshop:
ask a couple of questions to yourself:
how many adults who complete ABA or related interventions, got a job?
how many adults who complete ABA or related interventions, got a friend?
how many adults who complete ABA or related interventions, got married?
how many?
there are a few researches on that data, and its dicouraging what would happen to my kid when she grows up.
RDI is just NOT a relationship development, its a complete process to interact with the child in such a way to make them curious about the world, to show them the world in a NON scripted way.
I would highly recommend going to http://www.rdiconnect.com and getting their DVD. I know its expensive (about $150), but the 5 hour DVD has theory and videos of real kids in real life settings, doing things that kids with autism are NOT supposed to be able to do.
I am still learning about the program, I just wanted to inform people who are looking for NON-SCRIPTED way to treat autism.
I learned that kids with autism are just scared, uncertain and confused, they just need our help so give them one more chance to lead a normal life.
please let me know if you have any questions, again, I am no expert but try the following thing I tried on my niece with amazing results.
My niece comes to me every day with TV remote so that I can turn on her favorite video. I am sure this happens to a lot of us.
I did the following when she put the remote in my hand:
I let go of the remote and it fell to the floor, I said a BIG OHH. and I kept QUIET. did not say another word.
my niece went away a few steps, gathered herself and came back after 3 seconds. she picked up the remote and gave it to me. I did the SAME THING. dropped the remote and said OHHH. she again ran away a few steps.
She gathered herself and came back again. 3rd time I did the same thing.
this time She did not run away, she stayed there and picked up the remote and handed it to me.
during all this time, I did not say a word other than "OHH".
the moral of the story is:
At first she was uncertain and ran away when a uncertain, unexpected thing occurred. She got familiar with the situation after 3 times and she handles it on her OWN. I did not direct her, no prompting NOTHING...
try saying NOTHING around your autistic child and you will be amazed when she/he may do.
well thats all I can say right now. she has progressed to a point now where she makes sure I have grabbed the remote before she lets go of it. I am making her do the work of making sure of that NOW. looking to expand it even more, lets see how.
We will be hiring a RDI consultant which are very hard to come by....lets see what happens.
also, RDI is about teaching the parents of the child, how to interact with their child so that their thinking develops. its a very tedious step by step process/activities catered to the child. no more 10 consultants/strangers with rotating schedules to come and teach my kid some prompt dependent and scripted LIFE.
I am excied, and ready to work hard so that my kid has a good future, a job, friends and a married life.
I forgot to include the link to their website: its http://www.rdiconnect.com
it will change the way you think about/of autism.
