Hi everyone,

I have a six year old daughter with autism that is having a very tough time in kindergarten. She is extremely bright and reads at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. She loves computers, geography, math and science and when she's at home she loves to learn, but at school she shuts down and acts out. Her teacher does not seem able to handle the acting out and we're considering home schooling. Has anyone had any similar experiences and do you have any advice for desperate and frustrated parents? Thanks so much.

Angel

You could have written that about my son. He is six and in Kindergarden, loves the same things and reads at the same level. He is great at home but acts out at school to the point we have been weened back to one half day. I am not sure what to do. Maybe home school.

Keep me posted

I think the early reading could be a part of something called hyperlexia. You could find more information about hyperlexia here:

I wonder if the acting out at school but not at home could be happening because of the sensory overload at school, because that was happening with my daughter too. We moved her from mostly mainstreamed to mostly self-contained. It helped somewhat, but now we are working on mainstreaming her more. I don't like them having a child come to school just once a week. That seems wrong to me. Are we talking about public schools? Do either of your children have paraprofessional support at kindergarten? A paraprofessional could pull them out of the classroom before they get so overloaded.
