hi - i have a daughter with pdd - a teen. to help her with her period and all the sensory issues we at first used CLOTH pads that were navy blue-- yes sounds odd, but you can get them at the health food stores. the ones we used were "Glad Rags" made in Portland, OR, USA.
you have to wash them, but it is worth it- if it helps overcome the visual issues re looking at the bright red blood, etc. they are very soft and comfortable pads.
also i drew pictures of her anatomy (very simplified) and discussed it all very very much - when she was in a calm place..just threw it into the conversation even..how she is growing up so nicely---this was over the course of months.
also meds have helped with the PMS....but i know your daughter is quite young.
anyways - i hope this helps - i can relate. it will get a bit easier. best of luck to you.

My daughter is 12 and she just started her periods.

She is so excited to "have menstrual fluid." She thinks she is a grown-up now.

We got her the American Girls book The Care & Keeping Of You: The Body Book For Girls a couple of years ago and I have been reading it with her off and on ever since. The school showed the kids a movie about these changes in the fifth grade and they reinforced what I had been telling her. I bought her some pads long before the big day and let her "practice" wearing them. The only problems I have is that she went through two or three big packs of pads because she kept changing them as soon as they had a tiny spot on them and she refuses to use the pad wrappers to dispose of the used pads. She saves them to play with instead.

I had really bad cramps even as a teenager, so I gave her one ibuprofen twice a day to prevent them and told her if her tummy hurt, then she could ask for more and I got her doctor to fill out a form so she could get them at school if she needs them there. She never complained of pain, so I hope she does not ever get the cramps.

How old is your daughter?

I assume you already tried explaining that the pad needs to stay there?

Have you tried the ultra thin pads? Maybe she would find them less bulky and more comfortable.

My daughter likes the Always Pads with Wings but she changes them every time she goes to the bathroom.

My daughter is also very excited that she has "menstrual fluid" and now she thinks she is an adult.

She thinks she's ready to have a baby now. I have tried explaining that babies take a lot of work and she needs to be old enough to take care of herself first before she learns how to take care of someone else.
